A.C.E. Programme
The A.C.E. programme at Barfield allows pupils in Years 3 - 8 to address the core Sustainability issues and themes using Outdoor Education:
1) Think Local, Think Global
2) Food & Water
3) Shelters
4) Energy
A is for Awareness (Years 3 & 4)
Activities are designed for the children in Year 3 & 4 to increase their awareness and understanding of the particular theme, for example, in the 'Think Local, Think Global' Day, the pupils explore their surroundings with maps and map reading activities, making home-made dyes from plants in the grounds, recording bird surveys and making 'journey sticks'.
C is for Commitment (Years 5 & 6)
We encourage the boys and girls in Years 5 & 6 to develop opinions and attitudes to the issues explored, for example, in the 'Shelters' Day, making their own 'cardboard city allows them to appreciate issues of homelessness. They will typically debate the issues or produce their own Charter to round the day off.
E is for Empowerment (Years 7 & 8)
The pupils in Years 7 & 8 are able to use their understanding of the issues involved to become actively involved in them, for example, in the 'Energy' Day making brickettes from old newspaper for the Cookhouse wood-burner, and attempting to make their own hydro-electric power station!
These days run twice a year with a 2 year cycle, so that each year gets to take part in each theme at each age group.
This programme runs alongside a schedule of Subject Theme Days for the whole School.
