Mike Hawthorn Sports Hall Donations
We are asking you to give your support to a very important project which lies at the heart of Barfield School. We need to raise £280,000 to go towards the construction of a new sports hall which we intend to begin Summer 2012 – the year of the Olympics.
Sport is an important aspect of Barfield Life. Physical exercise and activity are at the core of Barfield’s culture and community. As such, we are committed to creating an inside arena for future sporting provision. This project will provide a new facility benefiting every one of our pupils, providing them with indoor hockey, football, badminton courts, netball courts, cricket nets and a basketball court. There will be onsite changing and washroom facilities.
The hall will be named “The Mike Hawthorn Sports Hall” in memory of the great racing driver who was an Old Boy here at Barfield between 1938 and 1942. Mike Hawthorn’s racing accolades include winning the 1955 24hr Le Mans race and the 1958 Formula One World Championships, racing in the glamorous era of Stirling Moss and Enzo Ferrari. He was a Farnham man and after his retirement from racing in 1959, he set up a Ferrari, Riley and Jaguar Garage in Farnham. He was sadly killed aged only 29 on the A3 near Guildford, in his British racing green Jaguar.
To honour such a legend, who achieved such greatness in his short life, we want to celebrate his achievements through our sports hall, in the hope that one day, we will inspire another sporting legend with the same courage and determination to succeed as Mike Hawthorn.
