We met our pen pals this morning at the College Notre Dame in Thury Harcourt. Initially, the children were quite shy but soon they were mixing well and trying out their French. After a lunch of spaghetti bolognaise, we got back on the bus to visit the Memorial Museum at Caen. It was incredibly moving and the children learned a lot about World War II. An exhausting yet thrilling day.
Another fantastic day at the Chateau! The weather held out and the children were able to participate in orienteering, circus skills, canoeing and bread making. After lunch, we were given a brief talk about cider making, which is produced here at the Chateau and the children were given a small sample to taste. The expression on their faces was priceless! Tonight we are excited to dress up for a French-themed night and eating snails as our appetiser. Tomorrow we are looking forward to visiting our pens pals at a school in Thury Harcourt. A demain.
We woke up to a more unsettled day of weather but the mornings activities carried on as normal. The obstacle course proved more challenging today due to the colder weather though the children had an amazing time. The archery activity proved again that Barfield has some promising archers! The afternoon canoeing was cut short due to intense rain so the group enjoyed hot chocolate and indoor games. Meanwhile, the bread making team were very creative in their endeavours and will be able to eat their creations at dinner. Another fantastic meal awaits and an evening of fun entertainment.
After a much-needed sleep, we woke up to sunny skies and were ready to practise our fencing skills. The children learned about the safety equipment and some basic moves before a duel competition. We had a hearty, hot lunch before our afternoon activities which consisted of archery and the infamous obstacle course. They finished the afternoon with a French lesson where they wrote about the days events in French. Another delicious meal awaits this evening, followed by a treasure hunt. A very successful first full day at the Chateau!
After a rather choppy crossing and several sick bags later, we arrived in Caen. The bus to the Chateau was uneventful and the children couldn’t wait to arrive and settle in their dorms. They enjoyed a lovely French dinner and lots of French bread. We will have a tour of the grounds before having hot chocolate and then bed. All the children are in high spirits and enjoying themselves immensely.
Congratulations to six of our Year 6 pupils moving on to Senior School next year with 7 Scholarship successes! They will be heading off with academic or sports scholarships (or in one case both!) to Bromsgrove School, King Edward's, Lord Wandsworth, Prior's Field School and Salesian College.
A warm welcome back to Barfield for 2019.
A beautiful service for the entire school and their families, with carols sung by the Pre-Prep Choir, Training Choir and Senior Choir and a whole school poem. An uplifting end to the term...and heartwarming start to the Christmas holidays!
